Hydrogen-Based Fuels Key to Renewable Future

The UK’s success in cutting carbon emissions by 38% since 1990 has been largely driven by the decarbonisation of electricity. However, there remains a huge amount of work to do to decarbonise industry, heat and transport and achieve the government’s net-zero commitment by 2050.

This is a challenge faced by governments around the world, but there is a solution that the UK is in an ideal position to pioneer – green hydrogen and green hydrogen-based fuels. Read more

The Digital Utility of the Future

Ready or not, disruption has come to the energy world

The modern utility has to embrace innovation and shake off the conservative, cautious strategies of yesterday. Digital transformation is turning traditional business models upside down, with formerly lucrative markets squeezed and new value chains popping up as customer behaviour evolves.

Start-ups, like teenagers who baffle their parents with their seemingly instinctive knowledge of how to work a smart TV, are dragging utilities into the digital age with their more nimble structure and better grasp of new technologies. But policy and regulation are still mired in the vestiges of the previous ...

A strong electricity grid necessary to power the economy

Last update on May 28, 2017.

A strong electricity grid necessary to power the economy

One of the key principles underlying Competitiveness and Value Creation is investment in key infrastructure and in those projects that strengthen our ability to compete favourably in international markets.

By ensuring the hard infrastructure such as a secure energy supply, ports, roads, rails, airports, broadband as well as the soft infrastructure, a region or nation will attract investment, generate value creation, support economic growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

While NIE Networks have the responsibility to ensure that the electricity grid is functional and well maintained, Eirgrid & SONI are responsible for operating the transmission system so ...

CEER seeks stakeholder views on the Flexibility Use at Distribution Level

The CEER public consultation document on Guidelines of Good Practice for Flexibility Use at Distribution level (C16-DS-29-03) explores the role of DSOs in facilitating greater flexibility on the energy system. It sets out a draft advice for regulatory authorities on how to improve flexibility at the distribution level of the electricity network, where it is deemed economically viable, does not unduly distort markets and competition and delivers benefit to consumers.

CEER aims to collect feedback from stakeholders in order to define Guidelines of Good Practice (GGP) that will aid National Regulatory Authorities in their design of regulatory frameworks to facilitate ...

Sunshine Coast leading the smart city movement

Sunshine Coast Council hosted the inaugural Australian Smart Communities Summit in Caloundra. The fact that the event happened there is a reflection of the commitment that this council has to the development of a smart city.

One of the most critical elements here is leadership, and both the mayor and the CEO are passionate about this development and are leading the process from the top. This also results in a holistic approach and, where possible, developments are aligned to create synergy, cost savings and a better outcome. For this purpose they are blending ...
